Tooth sensitivity is due to the exposure of dentin, the part of the tooth which covers the nerve, either through loss of the enamel layer or recession of the gums. Temperature changes and certain foods (acidic or sweet) can cause the tooth or teeth to be painful.
If you have sensitive teeth it is best to speak to a dentist. However, there are things you can do to help your sensitivity at home. These include:
• Use a toothpaste specifically formulated to help sensitivity
• Don’t overbrush and brush softly
• Cut back on sugar
• Cut back on acidic drinks, and drink them through a straw
• If you grind your teeth at night, look in to a bed time mouth guard to protect your teeth.
